The ancient Greek Oreibasia was a mid-winter rite dedicated to Dionysus in which the women left the city and went at dead of night into the mountains. There, in imitation of the Maenads, they drank wine and danced themselves into an ecstasy, thrashing their long hair about, and finally dismembering and eating raw a young goat which represented the god.
